sentences to explain why you placed them in that order. on the left to the appropriate blanks on the right to complete the sentences. Terms can be used more than once. a lower molar mass dipole-dipole interactions dispersion forces cations hydrogen bonds a more polar functional group a higher molar mass The alcohol has the highest boiling point because the molecule has hydrogen bonds that forms stronger dipole-dipole interactions when compared to both amine-containing compounds. When comparing the two amines, the primary amine has the higher boiling point because the molecules can form hydrogen bonds with each other, whereas tertiary amines cannot.

Explanation / Answer

i) The bonds between hydrogen and carbon atoms are non polar covalent bonds. The hydrogen-oxygen and carbon-oxygen bonds are polar covalent bonds. These polar covalent bonds can lead to hydrogen bonds forming between ethanol molecules and some other molecules.

ii) Alcohol have hydrogen bonding which is a type of dipole-diploe interactions. This is due to high electronegative values of oxygen atoms compared to hydrogen and carbon atoms.

iii) The reason for higher boiling points of primary amines is that they can form hydrogen bonds with each other as well as vander waals dispersion forces and dipole dipole interactions.
