Question
It is discovered that in a given population the frequency of individuals with sickle cell anemia (HBS HBS) is 1/850. Assuming that sickle individuals do not breed, what is the carrier (HBS HBA) frequency. Give the answer as a fraction, a decimal, and a percentage.
It is discovered that in another population the sickle carrier (HBS HBA) frequency is 1/40. Assuming that sickle individuals do not breed, what is probable frequency of individuals with sickle cell anemia (HBS HBS) in that population? Give the answer as a fraction, a decimal, and a percentage
Explanation / Answer
Sickle cell anaemia is a sex linke recessive disease , in which females act as carriers. Given that N = 850. Let us consider the number of males is equal to number of females. Then 425/850 number of females may act as carriers. Thus. 1/2 (0.5 0r 50%)is the maximum carroer frequency and zero is the mnimum. As it is an autosomal recessive, males cannot act as carriers (they carry only one X xhromosome, if they inherit the defected x, they exhibit the disease). Thus, the male carrier frequency is always zero in this case.
2. Given that 1/40 are carriers. If male and female are in equal number, all the 20 males are affected (males cannot act as carriers) and one female is affected, giving the affected people ratio as 21/40 (0.525 or 52.5%).
