CHEM 161: Atomic Theory Name Section Number: Prelaboratory Assignment I. Describe how a flame test is carried out using a wire loop and solutions, 2. Describe how to clean a wire loop using a Bunsen bumer and hydrochloric acid, 3. Is it sufficient to record a flame test color as "green Explain. 4. Using the visible spectrum from your textbook, name the six colors of visible light, starting with the shortest wavelength. longest shortest 5. Asample of calcium is excited electrically, resulting in the emission of light with energy of 3.19x10 "Jper photon. a. Calculate the fi b. Calculate the wavelength of this light (in nm). Using a visible spectrum, identify the color of this light: CHEMI6I Lab Manual W2017(full version) page 83

Explanation / Answer

1) Clean the wire loop in dil.HCl. Dip this wire loop into the sample solution of solid. It should be better to hold the loop at the edge of a flame to observe the color properly.

2) First dip wire loop in con.HCl for cleaning. Thereafter, by using wire loop rinse the deionized water. Then test the cleanliness by using bunsen burner.

3) In general, the green color sometimes may not be formed because of absorption. Hence its better to use spectroscopy for identification.

4) Red < Orange < yellow < Green < Blue < Violet
