Question

problem 2-8

A magnesium hydroxide solution is prepared by adding 10.00 g of magnesium hydroxide to a volumetric flask and bringing the final volume to 1,00 L by adding water buffered at a pH of 7.0. What is the concentration of magnesium in this solution? (Assume that the temperature is 25^degree C and the ionic strength is negligible). For the conditions given in Problem 2-7. what is the concentration of magnesium if the water has an ionic strength of (a) 0.01 M. (b)0.5 M?(Assume that the temperature of the solution is 25^degree C.)

Explanation / Answer

2-7 Mg(OH)2 solution

molarity of solution = 10 g/58.32 g/mol x 1 L

                               = 0.17 M

concentration of magnesium in the solution = 0.17 M

2-8 For the above problem,

If ionic strength of solution is,

(a) 0.01 M

concentration of magnesium = 0.17 x 0.01 = 0.0017 M

(b) 0.5 M

concentration of magnesium = 0.17 x 0.5 = 0.085 M
