Question

What can you do if you do not know which layer is which in an extraction procedure? Consider the following compounds. If mixed together, how would you separate them based on the different solubility properties? p-Chlorcanilise (amine) Denounce acid (along acid) Phenol (weak acid) Naphthalene (pental) The distribution coefficients for a compound are as follows. You have an aqueous mixture of the compound. Which solvent system, cyclohexanol/water, pentane/water, or diethyl either/water, would give the most efficient extraction into the organic solvents?

Explanation / Answer

Q.1,Ans.= To identify the layers, add known volume of water into th solvent layers,if volume of any one of the layer increases, its a aqueous layer and remaining was organinic layer.Another way is that,if we know the density of both the solvents.then higher density solvent at lower side and less density solvent at upper side.

Q.2,Ans.=1) 4 Chloro aniline seperated by adding conc.HCl.

2), Benzoic acid can be seperated using dil sodium bicarbonate solution.

3),Phenol can be seperated using strong base like KOH,NaOH

4),After all removal, remaining will be napthalene.

Q.3,Ans=Diethyl ether and water will give better efficient extraction because diethyl ether i a polar solent as compair to other.so solublity of Organic compound in ether is higher than other
