Question
Design a procedure to determine the mole ratio of 0.1 M sulfuric acid, H_2SO_4(aq), to sodium hydroxide, NaOH(aq). Write your procedure in the space provided on the next page. Include details about the glassware to use and the volume of chemical to measure out. Carry out the procedure experimentally. Try to follow the written steps as closely as possible. If you discover a step is missing or wrong, correct it. In the observations carefully note the solution appearance, the observed color change the volumes used, and the temperature change. Calculate a mole ratio for the H_2sO_4(aq) with the NaOH(aq) to the nearest whole number. Discard the reaction mixture and any excess chemicals in the chemical waste container.Explanation / Answer
20. To determine mole ratio of 0.1 M H2SO4 to NaOH
H2SO4 + 2NaOH ---> Na2SO4 + 2H2O
take 20 ml of 0.1 M H2SO4 in a clean erlenmeyer flask.
Titrate this with 0.1 M NaOH taken in the buret using phenolphthalein indicator. The color changes to pink in basic medium.
moles of acid present= 0.1 M x 20 ml = 2 mmol
moles of base needed = 0.1 x 40 = 4 mmol
volume of 0.1 M NaOH used = 40 ml
21. Procedure to be followed as written above
22. Solution initial of H2SO4 is colorless. It turns pink with a drop when excess base has been added and shows end point of titration.
23. mole ratio of H2SO4/NaOH = 1/2 = 0.5
24. Discard the solutions after titration in proper labelled waste container
