Question
what causes resonance on DECEMBER? I understand the concept pretty well and how to draw these for the most part but this molecule looks stable to me. Isn't Br happy since it has 7 valence electrons and satisfies the octet rule? my book says the correct answer is -CH2 with a lone pair and Br give up an electron pair to form an alkene between it and CH. I understand the lone pair and charge parting response to the Br alkene relationship but I don't understand why the bromine gives up a pair to give itself a positive charge. Isn't Br highly electronegative so it doesn't really like to give up its electrons especially when it satisfies the octet rule?
Explanation / Answer
Resonance takes place by delocalisation of pi electron and lone pair. It is due to the overlapping of parallel p orbitals. It stabilises the the molecule by spreading of charge density over theolecule.
