Question

Determine the Accuracy and Precision of the Medical Syringe You will determine the accuracy of the volume delivered by the medical syringe. I redid the experiment The density of water is tabulated according to its temperature in Table 2 in the "Background" file. Determine the density of the water from Table 2 closest to the measured temperature of water. Do not round off the density of water from Table 2. If temperature of water is above 25.5 degree C, then simply use the density at 25.5 degree C if temperature. Similarly if temperature of water is less than 16.0 degree C, then simply use the density at 16.0 degree C. For this question, no work needs to be shown. The density of water = b. "Is the volume delivered by the syringe accurate? (Is it really 10 mL?)" The question can be answered by using the mass of water you measured and the density of water determined in Question 5-a. Calculate the volume of water corresponding to the mass of water for each sample. Show your all work.

Explanation / Answer

a) Density of water at 21 C is 0.997 g/mL

b) Volume of water = mass calculated / density

sample 1:      Volume = 9.89 g / 0.997 g/mL = 9.9197 mL

sample 2:      Volume = 9.90 g / 0.997 g/mL = 9.9298 mL

sample 3:      Volume = 9.86 g / 0.997 g/mL = 9.8897 mL

c) Average volume of three samples = (9.9197 + 9.9298 + 9.8897)/ 3 = 9.91 mL                 Answer (c)

d) % error = (claimed value in syringe - reference value) * 100 % )/ reference value

                 = (10 - 9.91) /9.91 * 100 % = 0.9 % or rouding off will give 1 % error

d) % error = 1%
