Question

The maximum number of electrons that can occupy the 5d subshell is... 6 2 18 10 14 Which of the following statements about electronic structure of atoms is CORRECT? Shielding is the reduction of repulsion between electrons when they are paired with opposite spins in an orbital. Sublevels in atoms with multiple electrons are degenerate; the relative energy of the sublevels is independent of the stability of the shape or closeness of the individual orbitals. Penetration is the term for when a photon of light strikes the surface of a metal, subsequently releasing an electron. Coulomb's Law explains the attractions between a single electron and the nucleus, but cannot be solved for any system with more than one electron. Penetration results in orbitals from a higher energy level being filled with electrons before orbitals from a lower energy level. Which of the following is a direct result of electron spin? An increase in orbital stability upon pairing of two electrons The splitting of energy levels into sublevels Coulomb's Law d. A jump from one orbital to another orbital of a similar energy The shape and orientation of atomic orbitals An element has the electron configuration 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 4s^2 3d^10 4p^6. If the element were to form an ion, what would its hypothetical charge be? -2 -1 +1 +2 0 The orientation of atomic orbitals is associated with which quantum number? n m_1 Which of the following set of quantum numbers would be considered valid?

Explanation / Answer

Answer 2) True. Coulomb's law explain the attraction between a single electron and a nucleus, but cannot be solved for any system with more than one electron.

Answer option (e)

Answer 3) An increase in orbital stability upon pairing of two electrons is a direct result of electron spin.

Answer option : (a)

Answer4) Valence shell electronic configuration is [Ar] 4s2 4p6.

I.e. a stable electronic state i.e. an octet state is complete and hence ion formation is not possible.

Answer option (e) 0

Answer option: (c) ms.

Answer 6)

Note the important points while assigning correct set of QN.

a) The three quantum numbers (n, l, and m) that describe an orbital are integers: 0, 1, 2, 3, and so on.

b) The principal quantum number (n) cannot be zero. The allowed values of n are therefore 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on.

c) The angular quantum number (l) can be any integer between 0 and n - 1. If n = 3, for example, l can be either 0 1 or 2.

d) The magnetic quantum number (m) can be any integer between -l and +l.

Based on this

a) ms = -1 imposible.

b) n =2 them l = 0 or 1 and not 2 os impossible.

c) n = 5 then l = 0, 1, 2, 3 ,4 and we have l = 1 and ml = - l to 0 to +l and it's 0 so possible.

ms = +1/2 also possible.

So possible set of QN is n 25, l =1, ml = 0 , ms = +1/2.

d) n = 3 and l = 4 l > n not possible.

e) n = 3 l = 1 then ml = -1 , 0 , +1 but given that ms = +2 which is not possible.

Answer option (c).
