Question

Use three separate beakers to obtain approximately 12 mL each of 0.1 M KSCN, 0.5 M HNO_3, and 0.1 M Fe(NO_3)_3, Be sure to label each beaker as all three solutions are colorless! Use a volumetric pipette and measure 10.00 mL of each solution. Mix the three 10.00 mL aliquots of each solution in a 50 mL beaker labeled "Solution 1". a. Note the color of the solution in Data Table 1. b. Calculate the concentration of the Fe^+3 ion using the equation for dilutions mentioned in the Pre-lab Questions. For this exercise, you should assume that the concentration of Fe^+3 is equal to the concentration of FeSCN^+2 (this isn't a correct assumption, but is useful for this part of the experiment - later a more accurate determination of concentration will be performed). Record this concentration in Data Table 1.

Explanation / Answer

you have added 0.1M KSCN, 0.5 M HNO3,and 0.1M Fe(NO3)2, 10 mL each in a 50mL beaker.

Total volume in the beaker = 10 + 10+ 10 = 30mL

The dilution equation is : M1V1 = m2V2

where M1 = 0.1 M, V1 = 10mL, V2 = 30mL, M2 = ?

M2 = M1 *V1/V2= 0.1 *10mL/30mL = 0.033 M

Concentration of Fe^3+ is 0.033 M.
