Question
For each of the following reactions, in part (I) write a BALANCED equation and in part (II) answer the question about the reaction. In part (I), coefficients should be in terms of lowest whole numbers. Assume that solutions are aqueous unless otherwise indicated. Represent substances in solutions as if the substances are extensively ionized. Omit formulas for any ions or molecules that are unchanged by the reaction. Solid copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate is gently heated. How many grams of water are present in 1.00 mol of copper (II) pentahydrate?Explanation / Answer
(i) Balanced equation-
CuSO4•5H2O (s) ---- CuSO4(s) + 5 H2O (g)
Copper (II ) sulfate pentahydrate is blue. When it is gently heated, the water present in the pentahydrate evaporates. Copper sulfate anhydrous remains, which is white in color.
In 1.00 mol of copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate, 5 moles of water is present
1 mol water = 18 g
So 5 moles water = 18g x 5 = 90 g
Or we can calculate the grams of water are present in 1.00 mol of copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate by using following formula.
1.00 mol CuSO4 5H2O x 5 mol H2O / 1.00 mol CuSO4 5H2O x 18.0 g H2O / 1.00 mol H2O
= 90.0 g H2O
