Often community relations and public relations go hand-in-hand. For this week you were assigned a Frontline special from PBS about BP (“The Spill”; it’s available at http://video.pbs.org/video/1625293496). Thinking about BP as depicted in the documentary, discuss the following: a. Which stakeholders are most relevant to an ethical analysis of BP’s behavior, and what ethical responsibilities are owed by BP to these stakeholders. b. How BP should seek to manage its community relations in the United States. c. How BP should go about engaging in public relations. (Minimum of 700 words, maximum of 850 words)
Explanation / Answer
Ans:- a.
The people of the society are the relevant stakeholders and the people residing in the immediate locality of BP oil refineries and oil wells are the most significant stakeholders in the ethical analysis. When accidents such as explosions and fire outbreaks or major oil spills or harmful gas leakages occur in BP’s oil refineries and oil wells, then the people in the surrounding vicinity are the most badly affected (even deaths in extreme cases). So people in the local community have to be given utmost priority.
BP has to give safety a top priority in its operations of oil refineries and oil wells. All types of safety measures have to be undertaken. Proper emergency shutdown procedures should be in place. Efficient disaster management policies and programs have to be instituted. Separate disaster management teams and emergency teams should be formed. Frequent drills to handle disasters must be carried out. Further the company should have transparency in its operations and the public should be able to know what safety procedures are being followed. Moreover, BP should give adequate compensation to the families who are affected due to accidents at BP’s premises.
