Question

WOULD YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH BELOW? Very few company leaders are elected, the majority of leaders are appointed which involves them being selected by those in authority. Selection is typically based on prior experience, industry knowledge, specialized skills along with education. Where I am currently employed our CEO was appointed by a board that consists of 10 Nashville area business leaders. This board acts collectively in determining the operational functions of the facility and the CEO’s overall performance. If the choice was given to employees to select their leaders the outcome would result in a more harmonious work environment. I defend democracy because people are allowed to work together in order to bring about the best leaders and those leaders have an obligation to the people to provide them with employee wants. These wants may run the gamut from simple respect to an increase in salaries. Employees will then fashion their leaders by the values of honesty, respect, service, excellence and integrity. These are the values that most people will seek out in any form of leadership from their direct boss to the President of the United States. A king is just that a ruler who will rule over the people and dictate what they can or cannot do. This type of leadership will result in employees acting with a level II conventional morality attitude of “I don’t like you but I must do what you say because you are my boss and I don’t want to lose my job.” When employees feel like they are being ruled over and not given a voice, they will leave resulting in high turnover rates, low morale and ineffective productivity. Hence you see people “stealing time” by surfing the internet, actively socializing, etc. If we were able to select our leadership at Music City Center we would elevate employee dissatisfaction, lessen the ever “revolving door”, provide additional incentives apart from the basics to allow employees to enjoy the work environment. Most importantly it would eliminate the toxic environment that already exists. Because so many people are “disenchanted” with the company it has caused employees to work against each other and not with each other. This is a result of lacking emotional intelligence (EI) in many of our leaders, who resort to bullying in order to achieve their desired results. Providing a healthy work environment is essential for not only the employees but it will benefit the company as well. “Repeated exposure to negative emotions, hostility and conflict can lead individuals to form negative attitudes. It has been demonstrated that the emotional intelligence and ethical behavior of peers has a significant impact on the ethical behavior within the work team” (Hutchinson & Hurley, 2013). Explanation / Answer

I believe in the concept of authentic. I agree with most of the points made in the case, except the proposal to let employees elect a member of senior management. This would lead to lot more problems for employees and the organization. The process of employee appeasement will get corrupted by the people desirous of being elected. Potential leaders will focus more on keeping employees happy in order to sustain their followers. This will lead to imbalance of power. In turn employee’s productivity will suffer. The focus will shift away from making business strategies for competitive advantage of the company, quality of product or services, best practices, efficiency. The whole management structure will turn into a form of privatized government. Therefore leader has to be selected with due care. The selection should be carried out by stakeholders, such as investors and board members. Leaders’ selection process also involves background and credentials check. The process of leader selection has to be holistic, such that an authentic leader is selected, who leads by front, gets involved with people, care for their skill development and career advancement, then only outcome will be favorable.
