Apparently, many employees canceled their fourth-quarter vacation plans to work on the installation of a new company computer system. Under their current contract, vacation days not used by December 31 cannot be carried over to the following year.

- An instant message to a customer explaining that the DVD recorder that was ordered for their new computer is on back order. As a consequence, the shipping of the entire order will be delayed.
- A letter from a travel agent to a customer stating that the airline will not refund their money for the flight they missed; however, the tickets purchased are valid for one year.

For the negative messages listed below, indicate whether you would take either a direct or indirect approach.
1. Indirect approach would be taken, because the customer was not expecting this. There was certain degree of emotional investment by customer in making the purchase. Good working relations have to be maintained with the customer.
2. Direct approach would be better in this situation, because the customer did expected to some extent that refund is not possible for missed flights. The fact that the ticket is valid for one year, is a sort of compensation good enough for the customer to be satisfied. So the seriousness of the situation is low, therefore direct approach would be adopted.
