Business Communication BBM320 (Wk 6 DB: Distributing Reports – Resolving Ethical Dilemmas)
Scenario:
You submitted what you thought was a masterful report to your boss over three weeks ago. The report analyzes current department productivity and recommends several steps that you think will improve employee output without increasing individual workloads. Brilliant, you thought. But you haven’t heard a word from your boss
Did you overstep your boundaries by making recommendations that might imply that she has not been doing a good job?
Did you overwhelm her with your ideas?
You’d like some feedback. In your last email to her, you asked if she had read your report. So far you’ve received no reply. Then yesterday, you overheard the company vice president talk about some productivity changes in your department. The changes were ones that you recommended in your report. Now you’re worried that your boss submitted your report to senior management and will take full credit for your terrific ideas.
What, if anything, should you do? Should you confront your boss about this?
Explanation / Answer
Bosses in organizations act as filters between employees and senior management. if the boss doesn't want, it is almost impossible for employees to get noticed by senior management. There are some bosses, who are authentic leaders and they care for development of their subordinates. Then there are other set of leaders, who are bosses. All they do it is manage their impression before the senior management and act as an essential layer to filter information flow between employees and management and implement decisions of management on the employees. Most of the bosses exploit the good work done by employees, by projecting as theirs and thus rapidly advance in their career. In the present situation, the employees have to deal with one such typical boss. Confrontation is not the right approach. Confrontation will most likely lead to strained relations between the employee and the boss and in such cases, employee has only one choice left, to look for another job. So the employee in this case, should make subtle efforts that his boss acknowledges the work done by him and the management is aware about the actual brain behind those ideas, so that the employee gets the due credit. So the employee should approach the boss in person and ask about his feedback on the report and if there are any clarifications, suggestions or improvements required. The employee may additional express the desire to be a part of the core implementation team. This will give him the opportunity to interact directly with the management and there will be greater possibility of management coming to know and recognize his efforts.
