Question
You have subsequently hired recruiters who are not having a great deal of success recruiting and selecting scientists. The dilemma is that these same recruiters, who now represent the bulk of your recruitment staff, are much better at recruiting and selecting sales personnel. The problem is that you probably should have split the difference and hired more sales-oriented recruiters, but you failed to do this. Your choices are the following: Allocate additional funds in the budget for additional scientific recruiters Train the existing recruitment staff so that they are prepared to recruit and select the appropriate scientists. Respond to the following questions: In your opinion, what are the main issues pertaining to conflict and conflict resolution? How do you demonstrate your ability to effectively deal with conflict? In your opinion, what are the real-life solutions to the problem? What are the criteria for success for this project and how will you measure success?
Explanation / Answer
The main issue pertaining to conflict is the bulk of the recruitment staff is trained at recruiting and selecting sales staff, whereas the organizational requirement is to recruit scientists. This conflict arose, because while hiring recruiters, the manager failed to split the difference. Now the available choices for resolution of conflict are either to recruit new recruiters who are good at recruiting scientists or retrain some of the existing recruiters to hire scientists.
However, both the options incur additional cost. But hiring additional recruiters for recruitment of scientists would create a long term liability, and some of the sales-oriented recruiters will remain idle, because they are in excess. So in order to resolve this conflict, some of the sales-oriented recruiters should be cross-trained to recruit scientists.
A real-life solution to the problem is that existing scientist staffs’ expertise can be utilized to assist the recruitment staff in hiring more scientists.
The criteria for success of this project are - total cost of hiring, including the cost of hiring / training of recruitment staff; time taken to recruit the scientists as per requirement; quality of scientists recruited; Actual outcome of the project, which is contingent upon the above mentioned factors.
