Question

The project scope is probably the most overlooked deliverable in modern project management practice. The project scope is the roadmap to project completion, yet many projects, especially in large companies (e.g., Fortune 500), do not have a project scope. There is a direct link between the success/failure of the project and the existence of a project scope.

Explain why it is important to deliver a comprehensive scope statement at the beginning of the project. Are there any instances where the scope statement can or should be omitted?

Your responses should follow the APA Publication Manual guidelines.

Explanation / Answer

A comprehensive scope statement defines the periphery or the boundary of the project that limits the project work. It also defines the correct metrics to assess the success and / or failure of the project. That’s why, scope statement is mandatory. For example, the government launches a project to assess the literacy level in urban cities. Here, scope statement defines work that is only confined to urban areas rather including all the areas. Thus, the results of the project should only put light on urban cities rather including rural area also.

Though, scope statement becomes very difficult to define when the project is unstructured and evolving in nature as it is under agile project management. Thus, in specific scenarios, scope statement may not be very useful and it can be omitted.
