Question

We use work sampling as well as time studies at my company. We use this information to create standards for every job on the manufacturing floor. Each job has a "standard time" that the job should be accomplished. The employees must log into each job as they begin and log out of the job as they finish. This time is used to calculate "variation". It is also used to determine how well the employee is doing against the standard. I am not sure that this system is totally fair but it is one way to measure employees.

Explanation / Answer

This is the perfect way to measure employees performance. Any job with consideration of the worst case scenarios and the best case scenarios can be allocated certain time for completion. The employee can only efficiently complete the task or job when he/she has adequate knowledge regarding the process to be followed. If the employee is thorough in his process and is an expertise he/she will be prepared to manage the job effectively and increase the productivity. If an employee is not performing as per the standards then there can be either of the two reasons that the standards set are not in compliance with the job or the employee is not efficient enough to handle the job and needs more supervision or guidance or training for the job. Either way it is a good way of evaluating and measuring performance however, it should be noted that the performance standards should be set up after proper testing.
