Question
For each of the situations described below, name the best sampling method and briefly describe why that would be the best method. (Convenice sample, simple random sample, etc)
1. A researcher is planning to survey households about their energy consumption. When looking at some survey results from the past, the researcher sees that households with under $75,000 annual income responded very differently than those households with over $75,000 annual income. In addition, there was much more variance in the households with over $75,000 annual income.
2. A researcher is planning on a survey of snowboarders that live in Florida. The goal of the research is to better understand the interest in and willingness to pay for rental equipment when they head to the slopes in far away states such as Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana.
3. A school district in a large metropolitan area has 36 elementary schools spread throughout the area. They are planning a survey to parents regarding the quality of education children are receiving. The survey is long and complicated survey and will need to be done in person with an interviewer present.
4. A food manufacturer wants to do some quick, easy, and inexpensive taste testing among consumers. They are planning on conducting in places the public already congregates, and they are not concerned if the results are projectable.
Explanation / Answer
Random sampling, it is a simple probability sampling. Each member of the population has an equal and known chance of being selected. When there are very large populations, it is often difficult or impossible to identify every member of the population, so the pool of available subjects some time becomes biased. As above there is difference in observations from two sets of population. By increasing the size of sample one can reduce this type of bias.

Judgment sampling, it a non probability method of sampling. The samples are selected based on judgment. This is usually an extension of convenience sampling. In this method entire sample are drawn from one representative city and the population includes all cities. When using this method, one have to confident that the chosen sample is truly representative of the entire population, such as the case above.
3. A school district in a large metropolitan area has 36 elementary schools spread throughout the area. They are planning a survey to parents regarding the quality of education children are receiving. The survey is long and complicated survey and will need to be done in person with an interviewer present.
This is cluster sampling. The sample obtained will not be a simple random sample of all the parents of school going children in the district because different samples have different chances of being selected due to varying numbers of parents are associated with different schools.
4. A food manufacturer wants to do some quick, easy, and inexpensive taste testing among consumers. They are planning on conducting in places the public already congregates, and they are not concerned if the results are projectable.
Convenience sampling, it is used as exploratory research where the researcher is interested in getting an inexpensive approximation of the truth. The sample is selected because they are convenient to select. This non probability method is generally used to get a gross estimate of the results, without incurring the cost or time required to select a random sample.
