What is Lean Production Systems?
We know that it is not possble to convert whole of the inputs in the production process to the output. If we are using say X amount of inputs, not whole of the X actually comes out as output, rather it is only some % of X and some other goes waste. When the amount of waste reaches over a fixed level, where environment actually gets being affected, then it becomes a very big challange for a firm to control waste, which is putting a external social cost on the firm.
Using a system, where we know to get the right things at right time and at right place is what we call Lean System, which thus ensures that the wastages are actually minimised.
Yes, it is very true that when we think or disucss of Lean systems they actually looks great in theory but at the same time they are very tough to implement. There are many challanges a firm could face, when implementing the elements of lean systems-
1, There exitst supply chain issues in the system. Think of this, what lean manufacturing system requires is that there should be minimisation or almost elimination of the storage time for the inputs and outgoing material. So, just-in-time ordering is required or it is required that raw materials are coming to the production system in the perfect rate and perfect time. This is possible to achive only if suppliers are very close to us and not only that, suppliers are ready to supply as and when required. Thus Supply chain issues makes it really difficult to implement.
2. Implementing lean system requires that there is skilled and talented people working out there in the production processes. Technological infrastructure is required to manage some of the kep supply chain issues while maintaing the existing production process as well trying to implement the efficieny alongwith. Thus hiring more of techinical employees for the production is itself a challanging task for the managers.
3. Lean systems means more of technology, thus less people are required to do same task. Smaller no. of employees taking a larger no of responsibilities. Thus there are changes in the job description and in job roles.Thus it requires to successfully implement the lean systems, commitment is required from everyone in the the organisation.
4. Lean systems means that a substantial requirement is required in the technology. Statistical analysis may be required to analyse the quality improvements and output daily or weekly what so ever. Choosing the right system may be very crucial for the firms.
Thus it is very true that Lean systems looks great in theory but at the same time very tough to implement.
