President’s Kennedy special occasion speech is a commemorative speech on the construction of the Berlin wall, where he talks about the rise of communism and its evil agenda. While most commemorative speeches tend to be serious, and this speech certainly is, Kennedy manages to lighten the mood slightly by joking about his own pronunciation. Nevertheless, he still delivers a powerful and solemn message to the people of West Berlin.

In the speech, Kennedy makes sure to emphasize a confrontation against those that vouch for communism, communists, and those willing to accept communism because of “economic benefits,” as can be told by his constant repetition of the memorable line, “Let them come to Berlin.” To him, defeating communism, as a system, is necessary in the pursuit of the freedom of every man on this Earth. In order to make connect himself with his audience, Kennedy uses the line “Ich Bin Ein Berliner,” which translate to “I am a Berliner.” So while he encourages the people of Berlin to stay strong in the face of a communist threat, he puts himself on the level of everyone to even further spread this courage and strength to the people.

Although not as lengthy as most commemorative speeches tend to be, it is serious in nature and is delivered from a manuscript. Kennedy uses his repetition in order to deliver his powerful speech in the short four minutes he used. He did not intend to entertain the audience, however his somewhat lighthearted presentation in short lines every now and then served to brighten the spirits of the listeners. It helped keep the audience interested and strong against a corrupt system that feeds off of the economic enslavement of its peoples.
