Question
It was recently announced that a travel agent in Britain is organizing a set of cruises to set sail on April 8th, 2012. One will leave from Southampton, England, and one from New York. The two ships will meet on April 15th at the precise point where the Titanic sunk 100 years ago. There were 329 1st class passengers - only 199 Survived. There were 285 2nd class passengers - only 119 survived. There were 710 3rd class passengers - only 174 survived. There were 889 crew members - only 214 survived. Of the 13 musicians and postmen, none survived. On that fateful day 1,517 lives were lost. Repeatedly the story has been romanticized and in some cases even joked about. The 2012 commemorative cruises have attracted immense attention from 29 countries. Some are planning to partake in honor of lost loved ones; others are simply addicted to the story. Each ship plans to serve the same dishes that were prepared for the Titanic passengers. Some booked passengers are already planning to dress in period clothing. The ship departing from New York will make one port call in Halifax, Nova Scotia where many bodies of Titanic victims washed ashore.
Think and Disccuss about this:
Do you consider this attraction to be a dishonor to those who died on the Titanic? Is it honoring them? How would you advertise this commemorative excursion? Let’s say that you own a major cruise line. One day, you are approached by the agent who is heading this excursion. Would you choose to take part by sending one of your ships along? Why or why not?
