Question
Scenario 1 Joe has been working a lot of hours lately. Not only does he need a break, but he also worries that his studies are suffering. Midterm exams are coming up, and Joe has a research paper due. There never seems to be enough time to study on the weekends, particularly since he works on Saturdays. And it is tiring to come home at night after a long day of work or after night classes. With June pregnant and working full time, Joe worries about not being at home to help with household duties. He feels he has not been as involved as he needs to be in looking after their daughter, Betsy. Adding to his frustrations, there have been problems at the customer service desk. Not only is he dealing with difficult employees like Tina Tumultuous, but the team leader position for the customer service desk is still vacant. At the same time that he is advertising to fill the position and conducting interviews, he is working two jobs—his own and the vacant position. Jim Talent has been after him to fill the position. Jim has also been talking to all the managers about improving customer service. The level of service has suffered in recent months, which translates into reduced revenues. Usually patient, Jim has been pushing lately to turn things around. He does not dictate the precise hours his assistant managers must work, but the expectation is that, for now, they will put in extra time. Although Jim has honored Joe’s need to leave work early on various days to attend class, Joe is sensing growing impatience. Now does not seem like the time to ask Jim for a reduction in work hours—say, from sixty-five hours to fifty—at least for the next month so he can catch up on studies and deal with his family situation. But he must nonetheless ask. Scenario 2 Joe and Kim Khan have worked out their differences—sort of. While Kim no longer takes pot shots at Joe for his lack of experience, Kim and Joe have clearly different perspectives on how to perform their jobs, serve customers, and treat employees. Jim Talent continues to encourage Joe to work with Kim to address their relationship issues. This will be particularly important because Joe and Kim will need to present a united front in an upcoming negotiation they’ll be having with representatives from Do or Dye Tools . Among the recent issues that have created concerns are the following: Question. After the role-play, have the selected representatives for Joe and Jim (Scenario 1) or Kim (Scenario 2) first discuss how engaging in the integrative negotiation made them feel. Did they feel successful? What challenges did they face? 2. The members from each of the two teams representing Joe and Jim/Kim should discuss how the outcome of the negotiation compared to what they hoped to achieve during preparation discussions. Was the result positive, or was it disappointing? What worked well? What did not work well? 3. The members of the observing team should discuss the overall effectiveness of the parties’ attempt at integrative negotiation. Were the parties effective in applying the seven elements? Despite the outcome and whether or not agreement was reached, did the parties engage in integrative negotiation strategies, or did negotiations become distributive and adversarial? What caused them to be one way or the other? Did they work toward achieving mutual gains?Explanation / Answer
After the role-play, have the selected representatives for Joe and Jim (Scenario 1) or Kim (Scenario 2) first discuss how engaging in the integrative negotiation made them feel. Did they feel successful? What challenges did they face?
The best scenario they have for Jim's scenario 2 because even though stage 1 provides more time for Jim improve their problems, scenario 2 further reduces stress for Jim because their problems with Kim have been resolved and the new working environment for Jim would be easier. This will be particularly important because Joe and Kim will need to present a united front in an upcoming negotiation they’ll be having with representatives from Do or Dye Tools. The only challenge to face negotiation would perform instead of failing to bargain because of the differences between Jim and Kim.
2. The members from each of the two teams representing Joe and Jim/Kim should discuss how the outcome of the negotiation compared to what they hoped to achieve during preparation discussions. Was the result positive, or was it disappointing? What worked well? What did not work well?
The result was positive because the work environment to face negotiation between Kim and Jim were more relaxed and this allowed them to easily use their personal and group abilities, it is why the scenario 2 was successful.
Did they work toward achieving mutual gains?
The parties were effective in applying the seven elements to solve and coseguir good results. Despite the result and whether or not reached an agreement, the parties did participate in the trading strategies of integration to solve the problem and get a better alternative for Jim. Of course they tabajaron towards achieving mutual benefits and because they knew that if there are problems in the team, good results will not be achieved (remember the parable that says a kingdom that destroys itself, that kingdom will not prosper) as is in the if the negotiation is to be employed. If Jim has many problems it is better to help so you can be motivated to give the best of him in the negotiation to be used rather than affected the atmosphere of the whole team because of the stress that would result because of bad development of Jim.
Well, that is all. I hope my explanation has been useful for you.
Good luck!
