Question

Sex and Violence

Over the years, various social activist groups, including the parents television council, the national viewers and listeners association, and the national coallition against sensorship, have taken and stance for and against censorship of sex and violence on tv and in the movies. People call for more censorship to protect children from seeing sex and violence (many children watch as many as five hours of TV per day), while others don't want censorship , stating it violates free speech laws.

Advocates por less regulations state that major network TV shows for mature audiences are shown late at night while children should not be watching . However, advocates of regulation state the fact that many daytime soap operas are sexual and that cable stations show reruns of major network shows in the daytime and early evening when children are watching. For example, sex and the city is aired in different areas at all hours of the day and night.

1. Does the media (TV, movies, and music) influence social values?

2. Does the media, with sex and violence, reflect current religious and social values?

3. The federal communications comission (FCC) has the power to regulate television. Should the fcc regulate the media, and if yes how far should it go? should it require toning down the sex an violance, airing the show only later at night or should it take shows like sex andd the city off the air?

4. Is it ethical and socially responsible to show sex and violance against women, and to portray women as sex objects?

5. Which of the seven justifications of unethical bahavior does the media use to defend sex and violence?

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1.Evidence shows that television impacts societal values (i.e. sexual attitudes, values, and beliefs). People watch media at least eight hours a day out of twenty-four hours that includes television, movies, and music that could be responsible for playing a role in one’s societal values. For instance, the media manipulate people’s attitudes on several aspects such as: films, books, blogs, and television talk shows along with music advertisements that finally impacts how society handles issues . Also, there is high percentage of social media (i.e. facebook, twitter) that affect a big quantum of societal values

Ans 2

Media depends on its consumers; however, research show religion tackles society issues . For instance, the issue with sex and violence reflects on television and its impacts in the society are a revealing example of the complex relationships amongst media with culture. Today’s society shows violence as being the number one most serious problem. Usually, people look at the violence issue(s) as some sort of case study; basically, investigating it in detail. The people in society tend to find a suitable way to contract among media violence, then answers to others along with fewer complex isues within the media will be noticeable.

Ans 3.

In reality, the FCC is responsible for any interference in regards to freedom of speech;
programs comprising this material are heavily monitored. On the other hand, the FCC is not allowed
to regulate a broadcast’s point of view (Federal Communications Commission, 2014).
Considering their responsibility, no, the FCC should not be authorized to regulate the media. At
some point, citizens should take the responsibility of the programs
they wish to entertain. However, television programs that are sexually explicit should only be
shown during late hours of the day; this will reduce the changes of underage viewers having
access to these television programs

Ans 4

From an ethical and social perspective, we could argue that it is not socially responsible to
portray women in this image; however, these instances do add validation to preventative methods
such as ending violence. Portraying women as sex subject is not ethical, nor is it socially
acceptable. We may argue that these images are the leading cause of adolescent self – esteem
issues, and the culprit for considering women as the weaker sex.

Ans 5

The media utilizes disregard or distortion of consequences to defend sex and violence in the media.
This justification enables media to reduce the harm that will be presented after viewing
unethical behavior. The idea of this justification is that if the characters and or persons involved

are deflated, then no one will be impacted. These ideas do
not hold true in every case, considering that vulnerable populations are easily persuaded by
images in the media; without effective guidance, one may move forward with the unethical
behavior not realizing that the consequences are far more detrimental than initially perceived
