Question

Attend an event, meeting, or activity where you are different from almost everyone else in terms of your sex, race/ethnicity, religion, language, or some other dimension. You can choose a church service, local community group, volunteer organization, or student group on campus. Ask your classmates for ideas. You should probably contact the group beforehand to arrange your visit. Answer the following questions after your visit.

step 2

Describe the event, meeting, activity, or organization you visited.

step 3

How were you different from others in attendance? Describe what it was like to be different from everyone else.

The purpose here is for you to realize that there are clear emotional, attitudinal, and behavioral effects of being in the minority.

Step 4

In what ways was this experience actually similar to previous experiences that you’ve had? In other words, while step 3 focuses on differences, this question focuses on similarities and commonalties.

step 5

What did you learn from this experience? Share whatever lessons or conclusions you have drawn from this experience.

step 6

Reflect on and discuss the diversity paradigms that are reviewed in the chapter (the discrimination and fairness paradigm, the access and legitimacy paradigm, and the learning and effectiveness paradigm)

Indicate which diversity paradigm would work best, and why, given the experience you’ve had completing this assignment.

Explanation / Answer

step 2

I visited a religious group that is different from my own religion

step 3

I was different because I was the only catholic there, besides that people that were there had similar age and we spoke the same language. I felt uncomfortable at first because I didn’t know anyone but the leaders of the group approached me and introduce me to the members and explained what they did at the meetings

Step 4

In what ways was this experience actually similar to previous experiences that you’ve had? In other words, while step 3 focuses on differences, this question focuses on similarities and commonalties.

It was similar like to first time experiences, for example first day at college, first day at a new place of work, when you are introduce to the family of your girlfriend. At first you don’t know anyone but when you start talking to people you realize have more in common than differences

step 5

What did you learn from this experience? Share whatever lessons or conclusions you have drawn from this experience.

I learned that no matter what your religion is you can talk with other people and even establish a friendship, I learned that most of the time you create wrong concepts of people that you don’t know just because they have a different religion or ethnicity.

step 6

There is no information about the diversity paradigms on the question
