Question

The Golden Corporation is a large 50,000 employee company with a recent history of bankruptcy and layoffs, and results from an employee survey showing employees feel overworked, disengaged from their jobs, and uncommitted to the organization. At a recent "Town Hall" meeting, a bold employee asked the Golden CEO, Greg Tipton, and the COO, Paul Mackey, what their leadership team planned to do to keep employees motivated, given the problems outlined above.

Paul addressed the employee: "Thank you for your question. What we are doing now is trying to get this company back on the right track financially so we have a way to offer value to our employees in exchange for their hard work. We are planning a new system of salary raises and bonuses for the top-performing employees, a much-improved 401K plan, and stock options, among other things. Not only do we want to be competitive with other organizations in terms of what we offer, but we want to be the employer of choice."

What do you think about the COO's response to the employee? Explain your response.

Do you think their plan would be successful at keeping employees motivated? Why or why not?

To what extent is employee motivation the role of top executives in an organization of this size?
