My chosen figure is Benjamin Franklin. He was one of the Founding Fathers of USA and was a renowned author, politician, scientist, statesman and diplomat. He championed the cause of colonial unity.

Benjamin Franklin and his values are still relevant today not only in the USA but in other parts of the world. Benjamin Franklin's emphasized on values like hard work, thrift, having a community spirit and education when he was the United States Ambassador to France. These values are still relevant today not only for USA but for the entire world. Many countries in the European Union are reeling from an economic crisis. These nations can use the value of hard work and thrift to save more of their income. A higher savings rate will help these nations better their GDP growth rate through capital formation.

Franklin worked actively for USA's independence. He, through the Second Continental Congress, worked to draft the Declaration of Independence. He played an instrumental part in France signing the Treaty of Alliance with America. He also helped USA secure loans from France. Moreover, Franklin was a crucial member of the commission which negotiated the treaty that resulted in Britain recognizing its former thirteen colonies as a sovereign nation.

Benjamin Franklin was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. This convention drew up the Constitution of the United States. Frankin had great scientific achievements to his name but he always believed that public service was more important than science and this notion of his prompted him to make significant contributions to the formation of United States.

The society remembers Benjamin Franklin as America's foremost Founding Fathers. He is also remembered as an accomplished printer and publisher, author, inventor and scientist, and diplomat.
