General Education Skills and Competitive Edges homework
In the reading for this module, author Rick Newman writes that employees who demonstrate "multidisciplinary agility" have a competitive edge and that "learning new skills is anything but a temporary assignment." For this discussion post, first decide which general education skill covered in the Seminar courses to this point (communication, critical thinking, or information literacy) provides the biggest competitive edge in your field. Then, explain why you feel it provides such a competitive edge, and how you can continue to improve in this area after graduation. Also consider and share employer-desired soft skills, and how they will provide a competitive edge specific to your future career.
For example, if you are a Criminal Justice student, you might decide that Communication is the general education skill that provides the biggest edge to employees. Then, you might write about the increasing importance of written communication as it relates to increased technology available to those in the field.
Explanation / Answer
As the author explains, currently one person with a professional degree, is not the main requirement to get a good position within a company, as every year there are many people leaving a university.
From that moment, we all enter an increasingly competitive environment, and it is well known that companies are looking for people with greater power of self-management, proactivity, skills for teamwork, to properly interact with others, and with adequate communication abilities.
As an industrial engineer, specializing in planning multidisciplinary projects, it is necessary to develop these three topics, communication, critical thinking, and information literacy, and it is unlikely that companies invest money in their employees to develop these skills.
I think communication is the most important in my career as a planner must be able to adapt to work in teams with different leaders of disciplines, generate reports with information that is useful for both the customer and my superiors, achieving to adapt to customer requirements with respect to the real performance of the company running the project, knowing how to communicate the warnings and recommendations to bring a project to successful conclusion.
This ability can be expanded through information literacy, which is currently developed with the use of internet to learn about neuro linguistic programming, emotional intelligence, body language, which are subjects that are not taught in the formal education system , and apply necessary within a corporate environment.
Such skills are not reflected on a resume, but they are the most common cause of problems in human relationships within a team, however companies do not invest in this kind of knowledge, for example: Motivating others, deploying skills to lead and be respected, developing in others the ability to act / react / intervene and take the initiative and engage their responsibility undertaken work, making a success of the negotiations, resolving conflicts, expressing their views orally, and developing communications appropriate written.
Every day a new input on such issues is obtained, so this is not a temporary study, but learning should be continuous, taking into account the new knowledge could become my strongest asset.
