Interview with a manager at Walmart

Last week I got an opportunity to meet a store senior manager of Walmart near California.

He has a total work experience of 21 years that too in full-fledged retail operations. He is so patient while listening to my question that shows his interpersonal skills. As Is observed the he was interacting with staffs and customers simultaneously with concentration and dedication. He said every week there are lot of customer related issues like too much of queue in billing, lack of stocks for their favourite brands , pilferages etc. He has to interact with customers and vendors or even logistics providers of various countries during his business time. So language sometimes is a barrier and as a part of this he learn other foreign languages such as French and Spanish. He monitor customers with the help of technical aid such as CCTV and also through walk through audit, that time he interact closely with customers to understand their needs as well. Every week stock ratios are managed using inventory controls and he propose new position offer items to increase sales through better visibilities. New staffs are engaged sometimes as a part of seasonal sales. So he hast to train them follow best practices. He motivates staff like a leader as some staffs might have many personal related issues that might reflect in their day to day job. Sometimes issues and conflict between staffs also has to be resolved.

I explained him about the major 4 types of managerial skills as a part of my management curriculum. He said he has to go through people management, conceptual skills, technical skills ( retail science) & decision making skills ( like monitoring regulating day to day business). Under him around 200 staffs are working on 2 shifts. Sometimes night shifts are required for inventory calculations and other stock transfers. His role has many ethical responsibilities like managing huge stocks without any discrepancies or mismatches. He has to lead by example t other staffs about sincerity and dedication. He has to report to senior management on frequent basis and audit teams like ( process & quality ) teams visit the stores to ensure the practices. He maintain many data related books and other inventory control logs to fulfil the requirement. Supplier rating is given by their quality f products and timely delivery. On day to day basis he has to interact with stock control systems and other suppliers to ensure sufficient product presence in the store. I felt the culture of store is very good as staffs are from various parts of continents and they are working with good harmony.

He is not just a manager but a good leader who motivates and encourages the staffs and alos maintain good relationship and rapport with stakeholder and customers. He ensure proper work life balance for their staffs and regular staff meeting are co ordinated to address their concerns.
