The following different type of risks can arise when developing and creating a company intratnet:

(i) poor planning - The intranet project plan has to be developed for the entire duration of the project. There has to be proper plans developed for each and every aspect of the project like procurement of hardware and software, implementation phase, the phases involving the pre-launch, launch and then the post-launch. Poor planning may derail the project.

(ii) insufficient infrastructure - the project will require optimum infrastructure in terms of hardware, software, network, and other technical and infrastructure requirements. Insufficient infrastructure will pose a risk during the development phase. It will also be a risk during the post-launch phase, when usage will be impeded by the lack of proper infrastructure.

(iii) lack of project direction - another key risk is when the organization does not know the goals and objectives of the intranet project. The organization should clearly know why the intranet is there, what is its use, and what purpose is the intranet serving. Lack of clarity regarding this may lead to the development of a sub-optimal intranet, which may not meet the requirement of the organization and its employees and other stakeholders.
