Locate a person who has lived in your state his/her whole life or at least 90% of their life. Ask the person's permission to use his or her name and quotations in the paper, and ask the individual how to correctly spell their name. Prepare your questions ahead of time and craft them well. Find out about the person's experience with tourists and/or transplants.

Write an essay of 250-500 words about the experience. Do not write it as a verbatim account of the interview. Use quotes as needed, but write the paper as an essay. Where did you meet the person? How long have they lived here? What did you learn? Was this person's attitude typical? How, specifically, did the person native to your state treat the tourist?

Reflect on how much this experience stretched your comfort zone and how this observation could affect your intercultural communication.

Explanation / Answer

Mr. John White is around 50 years of age and has been living in the state of California ever since his birth. Mr. White was born and brought up in the state. He received his education in the state and is now settled here. He works for an engineering firm, is married and has two children. He is an anglo-American and the locality where he lives consists of around 70% anglo-Americans and the balance 30% belong to other races.

Mr. White has been using tourism as a means to understand indigenous culture and how he fits as a part of this culture. Usually, people living in this part treat tourists with resentment. People have this perception that tourists can have a negative impact on their indigenous culture. They site how tourists create problems like noise pollution, liquid and solid waste etc.

However, Mr. White's attitude is atypical. He respects and appreciates the tourists. He is of the view that increase in tourism has several benefits. Firstly, people become less dependend on the local resources. Tourism helps in making the economy vibrant and promotes industrialization. He acknowledges that tourists bring with them their set of problems which can threaten the social structures, ecosystems, and relatinships. But Mr. White says that the onus is on the indigenous people to take advantage from this situation and minimise any possible damages.

The observation will help me develop a positive attitude towards intercultural communication. I am encouraged to go beyond my comfort zone and actively participate in intercultural communication and benefit from the same.
