Question
please respond with a sentence response at least, I need this to study for my exam.
Serial dilution
Series of containers each 1/10 the concentration of the previous.
e.g.
100 grams of gluclose in tube 1 volumeof 1 ml
10 grams of gluclose in tube 2 volume 1 ml
1 gram of gluclose in tube 3 volume of 1 ml
etc
be able to describe a serial dilution and how you might prepare one.
Know how the metric prefixes milli micro and nano relate to one another
e.g.
1 milliliter is 1000 microliters and 1 million nanoliter
Explanation / Answer
concentration is mass per unit volume. In tube 1 100g is present in 1ml , so concentration is 100g/ml. This is 100 dilution
In tube 2, 10g/ml glucose is present. Now how to prepare it , using serial dilution. Take 0.1 ml (100 microlitre) of solution from tube 1, and add it to 9.9 ml (9900 microlitre) distilled water. 10g/ml glucose of tube 2 will be formed. This is 10-1 dilution.
Now, take 0.1 ml (100 microlt.) of solution from tube 2 and add it to 9.9 ml (9900 microlt.) distilled water. 1g/ml glucose will be prepared as mentioned in tube 3. This is 10-2 dilution.
In this way, serial dilutions upto any value may be prepared.
