Google’s top managers have heard of your budding skills of analysis as a new project manager with the company. You have been assigned to a strategic planning committee where your charge is to analyze the search industry and Google’s competitive position. Your report should include a 3-4 page executive summary of recommendations necessary to allow Google to strengthen its lead in the search industry and to make a success of its recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility and other recent ventures. You should also provide a recommendation concerning how to best address concerns over possible ethical lapses at the company. Your recommendations should be specific and supported with facts from your industry analysis, company situation analysis, and financial analysis. Please attach whatever tables, figures, or other exhibits you believe necessary to support your conclusions. (You should utilize the financial ratios presented in the Appendix of the text as a guide in doing your financial analysis of the company.) Google is market leader in search industry with 70-80% of traffic comes from Google. Major competitor for Google include Microsoft Bing, Yahoo, Mozilla,Apple Safari etc.
Every search engine mentioned has some sort of algorithm which gives it its competitive edge. To remain ahead in the competition Google need to make sure that its algorithm is still the best and innovates time to time. Most importantly the IP of algos in total should not be copied by any other player.
On closer look at Mozilla it is also evident that it is one of the major tool for white hat hackers for ethical hacking and that gives its edge in that community. Considering them as influence leaders for other IT geeks Mozilla with some innovation can overcome Google as it has support of a great IT group. To strategically counter this move we believe that Google new version should also be compatible in terms of plug gins as and when need so that it remains in control of it.
Latest financial reports from Microsoft suggest that its personal computer business is bleeding and all the good news it has made in the AGM is of cloud and other mobility products. Microsoft at one time was making majority of its revenue from PCs now it has decreased to 60% as per last FY. From press conference one thing is clear that Microsoft will go more innovation with particular focus on cloud and might innovate Bing as well. It might make it cloud based product and provide more innovative ways like it has done for Office. Therefore, we strongly recommend Google to watch that space and make sure it keeps abreast with all the innovation Microsoft can bring in.
Regarding other recent ventures of Google we feel that they are necessary and Google is moving in right direction by making itself alphabetical company. We have seen recently how like of Microsoft and Apple is changing their portfolio from just PC maker to cloud based solution provider. Similarly, we feel Google should also focus on changing its portfolio and moving I n positive direction by exploring mobility products
