Question
Scene: You are returning to the Fields farm for the last time. You are happy that you've been able to help the sisters with their business as much as you have, however, your team is carrying a bit of sadness on this trip too. You've really enjoyed getting to know the sisters and you will miss your distraction from city life. All three sisters are waiting on the farm house porch when you arrive, and as you have come to expect, Josie is the first to speak up...
Well, hello, we meet again! We just have to tell you how much we'll miss your visits. Though this is the last time we'll be meeting in an official capacity, please remember that you are always welcome to come and see us. We would be honored to have you check in on us and see how successful your recommendations have become. So, what are we looking for from you today? We'll tell you.
As we were paging through the reference book you left us, we stumbled on a passage from one of the female greats – the late Grace Hopper, the first female admiral in the U.S. Navy, who wrote that "you manage things; you lead people." We would like to take that advice to heart by ensuring that we are properly leading our new business. We also know from the employee survey that this is an area we are lacking in. So we want to benefit from your team's expertise on what it means to be good leaders. You are much savvier on the research related to this topic, and though we'd love to have the time to read a thousand leadership books, we trust that you will impart your wisdom on us and leave us with the ideas you feel are most important.
We were also a little surprised about some of the survey findings that suggested we don't value our employees' opinions and suggestions, and that is something we must do better in the future. Could you help us understand what we might be able to do in the future that would make our employees feel like they are valuable members of our team?
Next, and as we told you at the beginning, social responsibility is important to us. We would love to be able to host, or at least be involved with, some ongoing community service projects or other ways we can give back to our community. The employee survey feedback was a surprise to us when our employees indicated they don't feel like they make a difference in the lives of others. That sure was a wake-up call, and we think a carefully designed social responsibility program could boost our employee engagement in this area.
Finally, we have been talking and feel that our management team, including ourselves, could benefit from some sort of a formal training program, designed by you of course, that would include important topics like perception, motivation, conflict management and communication techniques. So if you can help us with that, we would greatly appreciate it.
Well... I guess that's it! We can't believe we've really reached the end of our sessions with your team. As we told you in our last email, we'd love to have you stay for dinner. We've invited our employees to stay for the evening and celebrate with you on a job well done. Now, how do cheeseburgers and corn on the cob sound to you...?
Prepare a list of at least three ideas you have on ways to strengthen employee engagement. The focus here should be on community service projects or other ways they can continually give back to their local community and should incorporate the employee feedback you received. Be thorough in your description of recommended projects?
