Mintzberg argues that’ “strategy is the mediating force between an organization and its environment. Strategy formulation therefore involves the interpretation of the environment and the development of consistent patterns in streams of organizational decisions (strategies) to deal with (Matheson, 2009).” Why is it important for a strategy to be specific to its environment?

Explanation / Answer

Well, as we all know that environment plays a very important as well as useful role while one chalk out a strategy for something. Here too, the author has stressed upon the role the environment plays while an organization or an individual makes a strategy for themselves.

Here, the author has mentioned mainly three strategy modes, namely, planning, adaptive and entrepreneurial. And all these strategies involves the environmental factors in their respective processes of functioning.

Planning: As mentioned in the article, this strategy requires the organization to be stable and predictable and at the same time has the ability to deal with uncertainties. So, here, environment and related conditions plays a very significant role.

Adaptive: In the conditions that are not that much suitable and the entire atmosphere is totally unpredictable with no specific objectives or goals in site, this kind of strategy is adopted. The word itself suggests, that the current problems and the ways to deal with them is of priority and the organization has to adapt according to the prevailing conditions.

Entrepreneurial: When the organization has the conditions where it can search for new opportunities and a visionary path can be viewed with a centralized power, bold and effective decisions and growth oriented approach. This also involves the environmental factors to many extent when this kind of strategy is formulated by an organization.

So, in the end, one can say that environment do effect the policy making as well as strategic course of an organization in a big way.
