Essay Question #1

Explain the difference between the need-satisfaction approach to motivation vs. Goal Theory. Which of the two do you believe to be the most effective with regards to motivating employees for a Retail Store, and for a Manufacturing Plan. Please support your response with research (i.e. scholarly citations and referenced sources)

Next,

Conduct research and discuss your findings regarding how management or a business leader implemented any of the motivational Theories discussed in class (i.e. Malsows, Hertzberg, Expectancy, need-Satisfaction, MBO, or Goal Theory). Which theory did they use, and why? What was the outcome?

Explanation / Answer

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

Maslow believed people possess a set of motivation system unrelated to rewards. People are motivated to achieve certain needs, he mentioned 5 motivational needs physiological, safety, love, and esteem) and growth needs (self-actualization). People must satisfy lower level before progressing to the next one.

Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory

Herzberg performed studies to understand employee attitudes and motivation. He found out 6 factors leading to dissatisfaction and 6 to satisfaction. Satisfaction: Achievement, recognition, works itself, responsibility, advancement and growth. Dissatisfaction: company policy, supervision, relationship with boss, work conditions, salary, relationship with peers.

Goal-setting theory

Drs. Locke and Latham identified five elements that need to be in place for us to achieve our goals

In manufacturing companies the need satisfaction approach would be more preferrable and in retail stores the goal setting theory would be more effective. In manufacturing plants the processes are usually set and defined. The production capacity is also set and scope of improvement is very limited. It is also seen in manufacturing units that the employees have possessed the requisite skills thus the scope of enhancing of the skills is also limited. Thus, in manufacturing plants the focus is on satisfying the lower level needs first and then satisfying the higher level needs.

On the other hand in goal setting theory the focus is on meeting new challenges and defining goals and having the clarity in order to achieve such goals. The scope of achieving higher goals is possible only in case of retail chains where the goals could be set at higher position and could be increased.

Thus, it could be said that Maslow's need priority theory works well in manufacturing plants and the goal-setting theory works well in case of retail outlets.
