Explanation / Answer
1. Honda has been successful mostly due to its forward thinking. In an era, when most companies were concentrating on their domestic markets, Honda took the risk of looking outwards at overseas markets outside Japan. Honda has always had an aggressive global strategy. Secondly, Honda follows the strategy of appointing only those employees are candidates as CEO who have an engineering backgrounds. This enables the CEO at Honda to be well versed about the operational aspects at Honda. Lastly, Honda follows the principle of factory flexibility, allowing it to manufacture multiple cars in a single assembly line.
As far as Apple is concerned, the company's generic startegy can be attributed to its success. Apple's generic strategy is based on the following - high rate of innovation, excellent product design. This enables Apple to follow broad differentiation i.e making differentiated products for a wide range of buyers. As the products have excellent designs and are high on innovative factor, Apple is even able to command a premium price for its products.
2. In terms of globalisation, both Honda and Apple follow an aggresive policy to capture new markets in new countries. They both try and penetrate market by selling more of the company's current products. Honda has really pushed its Accord in developed countries. Similarly, Apple has pushed the sales of its i-phones.
In terms of technology, both Honda and Apple try and offer better technology to its customers. Honda can make different cars in a single assembly line. Apple offers the best devices in terms of technology.
In terms of management, both Apple and Honda have some differences. Honda always appoints engineers as CEOS. Apple has no such rule of putting a person with technical background on the seat of the CEO.
3. The most important factor contributing to Honda's success is the ability to think differently and the ability to think as per its own requirements. For instance, the artilcle mentions that Honda does not believe in too much automation in production. Here it is not following others, but trying to determine what will suit its requirements the best.
For Apple, it is the emphasis on product design and the high innovation quotient, that can be termed as the most important factors for its success. Apple products are sold because of its quality and design. Apple has been able to leverage its innovation quotient to be able to charge a premium from consumers.
4. The challenges for Honda will be to develop cars for the future. In future, people will start using more electric cars and hybrid cars, as the fossil fuel's resources are fast depleting. Honda is behind in this segment and players like Toyota, BMW and Tesla are ahead in this market.
The challenge for Apple will be to keep the momentum intact, going forward. It has witnessed high grwoth periods, but that has started to wane. Apple has to work towards keeping the excitement of its buyers intact for its products. It will have to launch newer products at different price points. Future growth will come from developing economies and Apple will have to tweak its strategy accordingly.
