The drug testing of employees is highly controversial. As ethics some feels it is an unnecessary expense that results in unwarranted job loss due to urine analyses that are unrelated to job performance. Others feel it is a way of protecting employers and even society in general from being hurt by drug-impaired workers. The drug and alcohol testing advance several safety and productivity arguments. It is asserted that persons who test positively for drug and alcohol at the workplace experience higher levels of absenteeism and use sick leave to a much greater extent than non-users. Persons who abuse drugs or who consume alcohol to excess are involved in significantly more accidents than those who test negatively. Many a times it has been observed that the enterprises impose behavioral constraints on employees that may extend to off-duty times. It has also been seen that the testing process itself is humiliating to many people. In order to obtain a sample for testing, the person being tested must urinate in the presence of an attendant or supervisor. Often, medical standards are not used. Another moral issue is the implication of discrimination as a result of drug or alcohol testing. Perhaps the greatest concern is the systemic discrimination against disabled persons, persons with AIDS, visible minorities and pregnant women that testing may engender. Many a time it has been seen that business leaders are facing ethical issues like due to these drug test they are losing critical resources who may be key resources in their production process.
But if we have observed that these tests could prove more effective than random drug testing because they test a person’s current state and it is argued that by this it is often made in support of employee drug testing is the safety of everyone for these drug testing program should be clearly documented. care should be taken to assure that such tests are done in a uniform and impartial manner for all employees in the affected group.
This article apply to our personal or professional life also since we are also working in some or other organization and nowadays each and every company prefer to have drug test for employment.
In conclusion, there are important ethical challenges with workplace random drug testing programs. It has been seen that the inherent of unethical practices with drug testing, though it is technically legal but employers are obligated to provide a safe workplace, and impaired employees could negatively impact this goal and if carefully designed and carried out, programs for the screening of employees and applicants for drugs, including alcohol, serve to protect and improve employee health and safety in an ethically acceptable manner. Whereas drug testing is seen as a good idea or a bad idea, it has a negative affect on employee morale. Many view it as an authoritarian action, and it gives employees a sense of powerlessness.
