Question

The scenario: In this scenario you are the instructional designer and trainer. Due to a sudden increase in training projects your department is short of trainers. Your manager has assigned you with the task of developing and delivering a 1-day Train-the-Trainer program to teach 15 subject matter experts how to use a trainer’s manual, and to develop effective presentation/delivery skills. To ensure that the training has been effective and that there was a transfer of learning, you will want to/need to develop some evaluation tools to collect some evaluation data to be able to measure and report the success of the project, the effectiveness of the training, and the level of learning. The 3-part question: Based on the scenario as presented, explain at what ‘level’ you will evaluate, what specific data you will collect, and what type of tool or method you plan to use to collect the measurement data for this specific training program (3 points for a clearly explained and specific strategy for measuring project success, 3 points for a clearly explained and specific strategy for measuring training effectiveness, 3 points for a clearly explained and specific strategy for measuring transfer of learning, and 1 point for proofreading what you write and correcting spelling/grammar errors)

Explanation / Answer

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the training, Kirkpatrick Model for Evaluating Effectiveness of Training Programs can be used. It can be measured in four levels explained below-

Level 1 - Reaction

Did the participants find the training useful, challenging, well-structured and organized?

Level 2 - Learning

In case the participants' knowlegde, skilllsets or attitude change because of the training?

Level 3 - Behavior

As the result of the successful training, the participants' behaviour at the workplace has to change. If the behaviour is not changed, the training is not successful.

Level 4 - Results

Did the employee efficiency, organizational profitability, revenue, stock prices increase after the training. We have a measure these results to quantize the sucess of the training.

Data and information needed on each level

Level 1 (Reaction)

Level 2 (Learning)

Level 3 (Behavior)

Level 4 (Results)
