Question
A bioengineer is trying to understand the biomechanics of a hole created in the skin for a transcutaneous implant. The diameter of the hole is 5 mm. It became an ellipse with a minor and major axis of 3 and 7 mm.
a) In which direction is the internal stress in the skin greater?
b) In which direction are the collagen fibers more oriented?
c) How can the bioengineer obtain a circular rather than elliptical hole for his implant?
d) Assuming the implant is nondeformable compared to the skin, what problems will arise between skin and implant when a load or force is applied to the skin or implant by handling accidentally?
Explanation / Answer
a) internal stress is higher in the outside direction; Care is taken that there is least stress on the implant present on the inner side
b) collagen fibres are more oriented on the inner side. They will provide mechanical support to the implant.
c) I think it depends on the type of material and the way of implanting.
d) If extra load or force is applied , then the size of the hole, say diameter will increase further.
