Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA), a not for profit working for creating sustainable livelihoods has become a major disseminator of handmade paper technology. TARA has innovated a waste to wealth recycling technology that relies on simple production techniques and minimal mechanisation paper manufacturing machines. This enables the easy operation of the machinery by women and even by specially challenged people. TARA through its different initiatives for upliftment of the local community has established a model handmade paper enterprise at Bundelkhand, one of the most backward areas of central India. The model provides the local community with an alternative source of livelihood with the aim of disconnecting the dependency of local livelihoods from natural resources to create a reliable employment base throughout the year. In order to scale up the model, TARA as an incubator has established many small and medium scale paper recycling enterprises at different geographies in India.
The paper recycling enterprise is based on a simple production technology and can easily be operated by unskilled labour after training on production and operations. The concept is that the unit would be operated by the Self Help Group (S.H.G) after capacity building and a basic production exercise. A self-help group (SHG) is a village-based financial intermediary usually composed of 10–20 local women. Self Help Groups may be registered or unregistered. It typically comprises a group of micro entrepreneurs having homogenous social and economic backgrounds; all voluntarily coming together to save regular small sums of money, mutually agreeing to contribute to a common fund and to meet their emergency needs on the basis of mutual help. They pool their resources to become financially stable, taking loans from the money collected by that group and by making everybody in that group self-employed.
