Operations definition emphasizes decision, function and process elements of the organization. Discuss these fundamental elements as they relate to Noah and the Ark, with Noah functioning as the Operations Manager. Include your personal thoughts in
Addition to the Biblical account of the story.
By reading the bible we learn the story of Noah and the Ark. Noah was given the mission of constructing an Ark because the end of the world as he knew it was coming, he started immediately following the orders of God because he knew that God`s world were the law and he wasn’t going to give him a bad direction. He worked for a long time with only one goal in mind which was to craft the Ark, he didn’t care about other people`s opinion he knew the job needed to be done and he started immediately, at the end he saved himself and his families plus the animals and everything else was destroyed by a big inundation. We can say that Noah was the first Operation manager because he took decisions that were going to be for the best of the project (in this case the project was the creation of the Ark), the Ark was functional like a project, and the main function was to save the life of Noah and his family.
The construction of the ark was a process, it wasn’t done from one day to other, Noah had help from his family (team members) and he provided tasks to each of them so the goal could be completed
Identify the critical operations decision areas in an organization and discuss the responsibilities of an operations manager while addressing these decisions.
On a plant, the critical operations decisions most of the time are how much to produce and when to produce it. Depending on the type of product you create, there are times on the year where customers are more likely it to buy it, this also depends if you sell it directly to your customers or you sell it to a retailer.
Operation managers always work on forecast based on previous years, the season they are at the moment and also consult with their customer on how much they are going to purchase and the deadline for the production.
Another decision related is the fact that there are times you don’t have enough workers for your demand or you have too many, this is when the operation manager needs to make a decision about hiring more people, layoffs, or hiring temporal workers. The Ops manager needs to pay close attention on the tenure of the workers because it could be expensive firing someone due to money the company will need to pay him for his years of service (this depends on the country the plant is located and its laws)
Another critical decision is when the ops manager is looking for bottleneck on any process, he needs to come up with a solution that will benefit the company and will save it money, however many times this involves a change on the culture of the employees, some of them have been working for so long that think the way they do things is right and are never going to change it. To change the way people think is one of the biggest challenges.
