Question
Your son/daughter is playing Little League Baseball are you want to get involved to help. For each of the situations below discuss what you would do. A grand father is paying each child who gets a hit a dollar for each base reached. The league boundaries do not include where you currently live. The refreshment stand lost money last year under the old leadership and made over $6K in profit this year under new leadership. The traveling team has paid coaches and one of them wants to be paid only in cash.Explanation / Answer
The question is not pertaining to the subject - Operation Management but more related to social sciences and Ethics.
1. A grand father is paying each child who gets a hit a dollor for each base reached. The strategy is to give reward for achievement. Older generation is encouraging younger one to play an outside game involving physical involvement. Nowadays young ones are more interested in indoor games and that too may be on mobiles, ipods, computers etc. Incentive of a dollor may result in outputs (more than a dollor) on the part of children's good health.
2. The league boundaries do not include where you currently live. The interest of the child with respect to his/her participation in the league may lead to move to the areas, may be temporarily, so as to live within the league boundaries.
3. The refreshment stand lost money last year but made profit of $6K this year with the change in leadership. This year's leadership may be better than the old one as far as operation of refreshment stand is concerned. I would like to give more importance to the performance of the children on the play ground rather than the profitability of refreshment stands. Never the less the refreshment stand should not lost money, may be no profit no loss proposition be preferred.
4. The travelling team has paid coaches and one of them wants to be paid only in cash. Payments to coaches by the travelling team is very much desirable as per my understanding. However, payments only in cash appears too harsh in this era of digital world. Cash dealings in case found to be essential and otherwise legal should be properly recorded and made transparent in all respects.
