Question

. Although American slavery started small, after several centuries it led to the rise of sectionalism after the War of 1812 (and eventually to the Civil War). Explain how conceptions of race and the institution of slavery changed between the colonial period and 1820. How did slavery begin, expand, and vary according to region? How did slavery become so ingrained, and how did racism develop along with it? Cite specific examples and key terms (people, events, concepts) from across time and space. For instance, tell me about Virginia in 1650, and tell me about Missouri in 1820. Your textbook is the only source you will need. There is no word or page requirement, but the best essays will have clear organization (paragraphs), make a clear argument, and utilize information from across all seven chapters.

Explanation / Answer

In the colonial period, slavery in the USA was tied to the need for labor by the European colonies. The slaves were imported from the Caribbean. The Africans became slave on a hereditary basis.

In the colonial period, the North American royal colonies used Africans and Native Americans for the purpose of slavery. During the end of the 17th century, law became harsher against the slaves, limiting the slave's rights.

The year 1619 saw the first Africans landing in Virginia. Dring the 1650s, the racial attitudes were flexible when compared to what they would later become.

1820 saw a law which prohibited the import of new slaved from Africa. This led to an improvement in the living conditions of the slaves as the owners began treating them with more care. This was done purely out of necessity. More humane treatment were meted to the slaves during this period. In Missouri in the 1820 some of the slaves were even educated by the slaveholders themselves.
