Explanation / Answer
I think your first row should have UK pound /US dollars. The historic rates are 2.4 pounds / dollar...
For 1970-80: the dollar appreciated vs. the pound because the pound was worth fewer dollars in 1980: 2.22 vs. 2.40. It depreciated vs. the Canadian dollar as well because the Canadian dollir is worth more per US dollar in 1980 than in 1970. Versus the franc, it appreciated. (The franc was worth less in the end.) Versus the yen it appreciated as well. Versus the mark, the dollar appreciated.
For 1980-1990: the dollar appreciated vs. the pound, appreciated slightly vs. the Canadian dollar, depreciated vs. the franc, appreciated vs. the yen, and appreciated vs. the mark.
For 2000-2011: the dollar appreciated vs. the pound, appreciated vs. the Canadian dollar, (the franc became the euro as did the mark), appreciated vs. the yen, and depreciated vs. the euro. (US/euro rates are again switched. It's 1.33 euro per dollar for 2011)
