Question
(a) If the boxes are stacked 5-high on the pallets, and the pallets with boxes are stacked 3-high, then how many boxes can be stored in the warehouse?
(b) The company has decided to store the unboxed products in storage containers, along with packing materials. The unpackaged products measure 18” x 12” x 4”. They are going to be placed in storage containers measuring 72” x 48” x 24”. Each unpackaged product requires 2” of packing material along the width and length, and 1” along the direction of the height. How many products can be stored in each container?
Explanation / Answer
(a) Total boxes stored in a wareshouse:
Warehouse area = 500,000 square foot (Sqft)
Since 1 Sqft = 12"X12" = 144 Sq inch, hence
Warehouse area = 72,000,000 Sq inch
Aisle allowance = 9%, thus effective warehouse area = 91% X 72,000,000 = 65,520,000 Sq inch
Pallet measurement = 72" X 48" X 6", and box measurement = 24" X 24" X 12"
Number of boxes accomodated on pallet length wise = 72/24 = 3
Number of boxes accomodated on pallet width wise = 48/24 = 2
Since boxes are stacked 5 high on the pallet, thus number of boxes on pallet = 3 X 2 X 5 = 30 boxes
Also, pallets with boxes are stacked 3 high, thus number of boxes in one stack = 30 X 3 = 90 boxes
Area of 1 pallet = 72" X 48" = 3,456 Sq inch = area of one stack (3 high pallets with boxes)
Thus total stacks stored in warehouse = 65,520,000 / 3,456 = 18,958 stacks
Hence total number of boxes stored in the warehouse = 90 X 18,958 = 1,706,220 boxes
(b) Unboxed products in one container:
Measurement of unpackaged product = 18" X 12" X 4"
Measurement with packing material = 20" X 14" X 5"
Measurement of storage container = 72" X 48" X 24"
Number of unpackaged products accomodated in container length wise = 72/20 = 3
Number of unpackaged products accomodated in container width wise = 48/14 = 3
Number of unpackaged products accomodated in container height wise = 24/5 = 4
Total unpackaged products stored in each container = 3 X 3 X 4 = 36 products
