Explanation / Answer

In terms of political direction, I feel the most influential president has been Franklin D Roosevelt. He was the 32nd president and led the country through the period of great depression. He made the country victorious in World War 2 and introduced popular federal programs such as social security system. In addition to this, he has been the longest serving president in the history.

In addition to the accomplishments mentioned above, Roosevelt has been key in shaping the American politics to what it is known today.

In 1934 he passed the Reciprocal Trade Agreement Act. This act meant that the President of the United States could give tariff discounts to some nations when trading with them. The key point here is that prior to this act, the president required the approval of the senate in order to provide discount to any nation. However, this act gave the complete authority to the president. This was done in order to boost the economy of the country but if we observe deeply, this was also a move towards making the president more powerful in the country.

Another act passed by Roosevelt that impacted the politics for the years was Communications Act. This created Federal Communications Commission that eventually went on to regulate the various communication mediums in the country. Prior to this there was Federal Radio Commission that had the scope to regulate only the radio communications. With FCC Roosevelt replaced that and gave the government the control over content that is published over popular media that is available even today. This helped government control the media to a certain extent and shape the political scenarios.
