We have all worked in a group or team at some point in our careers. A team is brought together to achieve a common goal. The team needs to have members who have complementary skills and who are committed to a common purpose to achieve performance goals. However, teams don't move immediately toward performing,but evovle over time. There are five stages of group and team development. Think about a time when you joined a new group. it could be at work, in a family setting or with a social group. Which of the fivestages was the most challenging for the group to work through, and why? How might you have helped the group work through that stage differently based upon what you know now about the five stages of group and team development?

There are basically five stages of group development

For example A social group of people decidig to celebrate some festival function together. They decided to come togeher to plan for a celebration.

Group development stages like

Forming : Let say 10 people appointed as management committee to plan a work and arrangement for the celebration. So making a committee of 10 people is forming stage of group development.

Storming : This stage is very important. Here committee members will start actual work. It is developing stage. Here members will complete with each other for a point of view or a status or a idea acceptance. They have difference of opinion on what should de and how should it do and this will create conflict between them.

Therefore to settled down a situation Team leader should coach a team and ensure that they listen to each other and respect difference and ideas of each other. Team leader should be alert to see that not only person take control on conversation and decision everyone should be included and equally treated. This stage will end whrn committee members start accepting eachother and working together as a team. But this stage do not come to end than entire planning and celebrtion will be difficult to arrange.

Norming : This stage start when committee members start work effectively toward the goal to celebrate together rather than standing on personal idea and point of view. Here they are agreed on committee rules and norms for working together and they resolve all internal conflict and start work progressively.

Team Leader here may not work as decision maker and problem solving as all members are working together and self directed. Only if they are stuck somewhere than Team leader will help them to resolve the problem.

Performing: Here all committee will work on high level. They start looking for celebration place, things to need for arrangement and cateres facilities , arrangement for guests invited and all take care of all area. Team Leader need only to monitor the progress for arrangement.

Adjourning : When celebration is completed successfully committee will adjourned and members moe off to their different direction.

So I think Storming stage is difficult to handle when all members from different area comes and have difference of opinion. This stage is more challenging for the group. So resolving all conflicts and differences this stage need more time and accurate direction.
