Explanation / Answer
Answer (a)- The average for all the 30 workers is a productivity = (58.0+53.8+129.5) / 3 = 80.4 units / hour; and the best worker produces 141 units; so the worker PIP (assuming the quality and cost remain constant) is
Worker PIP = 141/ 80.4 = 1.75
Thus, it is a significant PIP. This worker PIP shows that the average hourly worker has the potential for more productivity.
Answer (b) - Now, for supervisor PIP, we will consider the two groups (except the highest one i.e. 129.5),
Average (of supervisor A & B) = (58.0 + 53.8)/ 2 = 55.9
PIP for supervisor = 129.5/55.9 = 2.32
Answer (c) - Considering the exemplar performance which is based on the particular achievement, as an individual’s performance may be the basis of other achievement. Also, it is the most sustained worthy performance which is expected to be accomplished.
Hence, the difference among the ordinary and the exemplar supervisor is more significant that that among the common and exemplar worker.
First group PIP (worker group with supervisor A) = highest productivity / group average = 65/58 = 1.12
Second group PIP (worker group with supervisor B) = 62/53.8 = 1.15
Third group PIP (worker group with supervisor C) = 141 /129.5 = 1.01
The higher PIP in the worker group is 1.15 and this indicates that to improve workers performance it is better to improve supervisor’s performance. In the given data set as there is the significant difference among the group averages, we should check the performance of the supervisor of the particular group as well as the worker and the two supervisors (A & B) are less competent compared to supervisor C. It is better to find what supervisor C is doing different from supervisor A & B.
