hu345-Unit 5 Discussion

The Discussion this week will help you identify and distinguish some problems with assumptions. Completing the reading assignment for this unit will allow you to more effectively and productively engage in the Discussion. After posting your response, please remember to review and respond to the posts of your classmates.

Assumptions

What are three key assumptions that you often make about the world, people, reason, etc.? How do these assumptions influence the implications and inferences you use in argument? What assumptions did you once make that you had to later reject?

Explanation / Answer

Many of us hold deeply embedded assumptions about people and work which eventually are based on fear, hierarchy and control. Furthermore it necessitates focusing on these fear-based beliefs which ultimately can facilitate in choosing a different set of assumptions. However some assumptions indeed deal with facts like the statement “all men are mortal.”

Assumptions that deal with straightforward factual information indeed can effectively be measured or observed directly. Furthermore analytical assumptions are based on facts which eventually facilitate effectual interpretation, evaluation and explanation. Furthermore these assumptions go beyond measurable or observable data to efficiently examine meanings and relationships.

Some assumptions deal with values which either you share them or you don’t. This assumption depends on ideas about what is fair which indeed are very difficult to defend with evidence and reason. However this does not mean they are wrong just because you are unable to convince them through logical argument.

Often we are not aware of the assumptions that we make and sometimes we do make some very bad assumptions without actually realizing it. One of the most significant elements of persuasive though process is to effectively examine your own assumptions to make sure that they indeed are valid and consistent with the argument and thus accordingly revise those that are wrong.

Nevertheless while effectively examining and evaluating an idea in light of test results it's very crucial and significant to keep in mind the test's assumptions and how well they are supported. If an expectation generated by an idea is not borne out in a test it might be because the idea is wrong and should be discarded or it might be that the idea is correct but an assumption of the test indeed had been violated.
